uMoya-NILU works throughout southern Africa with recent projects in Uganda, Angola, Mozambique, Namibia and of course, in South Africa.  An overview of some of the projects that we have been involved in recently, or are currently involved in, is provided here:

 

  • The development of the emission inventory module, Phase II of the South African Air Quality Information System (SAAQIS) has commenced. The project is being managed by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) for the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA).
  • Calibration, operation and maintenance of the North West Provincial ambient air quality monitoring network, which comprises 7 stations located at major centres across the province.
  • uMoya-NILU, together with NILU Abu Dhabi, will develop an Air Quality Management System for the Port of Abu Dhabi.
  • A qualitative air quality impact assessment for the EIA for the Mozpel sugar to ethanol plant, Mozambique.
  • The air quality specialist study for the EIA for the Alternative Fuels project at Simuma, Port Shepstone.
  • An air quality status quo assessment and abatement planning will be done for the Bwana Mkubwa and Kansanshi coal mines in Zambia.
  • The City of Joburg has appointed uMoya-NILU to conduct an air quality status quo assessment and update and review the 2003 Air Quality Management Plan.
  • uMoya-NILU has been selected to lead the development of the Highveld Priority Area Air Quality Management Plan for the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism.  The project team includes SE Solutions and Environmental Science Associates.
  • The Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU) has recently opened an office in the United Arab Emirates and has appointed uMoya-NILU  to assist with capacity building, emissions inventories and dispersion modelling in their Abu Dhabi office.
  • uMoya-NILU  is leading the develpment of the Air Quality Management Plan for the Western Cape for the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning.  The project team includes CSIR, EnviroAir Consulting and Sakaza Communications.
  • The design of an air quality monitoring system for at the new open cast coal mine, and air quality assessment for accompanying power station at Moatize in Mozambique for Golder Associates, representing Vale.
  • uMoya-NILU  has been appointed by Coastal Environmental Services to conduct the specialist air quality assessment for the EIA for the proposed Kalagadi Manganese Smelter at Coega.
  • The air quality assessment for Vopak Terminals Durban efficiency project at Island View through Golder Associates.

  • The air quality assessment for the Exxaro manganese smelter at Coega through Coastal Environmental Solutions

  • The emission inventory for Engen Island View

  • On-going passive sampling monitoring for BTEX at Sapref's Durban Refinery for Sapref

  • Emissions and hydrogen flouride dispersion modelling for Hillside Aluminium at Richards Bay

  • Air quality assessment for proposed Petronet refinery at Coega through CSIR and SE Solutions

  • The supply, installation and operation of a monitoring station for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs

  • An air quality specialist study and baseline ambient air quality monitoring for EIA for the proposed Mputa Early Production System at Lake Albert in Uganda for ERM Southern Africa (Pty) Ltd, on behalf of Tullow Oil. uMoya-NILU have also been involved in assisting with the optimisation of the generation technology to achieve compilance with ambient  air quality guidelines.
  • Training in air dispersion modelling using CALPUFF for Anglo Platinum.

  • An air quality specialist study for the proposed N2 Wild Coast Toll Road with CSIR for CCA Environmental Pty (Ltd) on behalf of the South African National Roads Authority Limited.
  • Input to the ambient dust management planning at the Bulk Terminal Saldanha (BTS) including the design of the dust fall monitoring network and the development of ambient guidelines for the BTS for Fe2O3 with CSIR’s Natural Resources and the Environment for Transnet Projects.
  • An air quality specialist study for a proposed ilmenite smelter near Maputo in Mozambique for Golder Associates Africa (Pty) Ltd on behalf of Corridor Sands Limitada.
  • Training course in air quality management for KZN's Department of Agricultural and Environmental Affairs with EnviroAir Consulting CC.
  • Air quality specialist study and baseline ambient air quality assessment for the EIA for the proposed Sonaref oil refinery at Lobito, Angola for ERM Southern Africa (Pty) Ltd, on behalf of Sonangol.
  • Screening monitoring using passive samplers to establish baseline air quality in the Ugu District Municipality.
  • Passive monitoring campaign for NPC-Cimpor at Port Shepstone to assess their ambient contribution in different seasons.
  • Air quality assessment for a proposed Portland cement plant near Karibib in Namibia for ERM Southern Africa (Ltd) Ltd.
  • Air quality specialist study for the EIA that is being conducted by Zitholele Consulting (Pty) Ltd  for Transnet Pipelines' New Multi-Products Pipeline that is to replace the existing Durban-Johannesburg fuel pipeline.  The study focuses on the potential impacts associated with coastal and inland fuel terminals and the nine pump stations along the route.
